Inaugural kunanyi Challenge highlights supreme EV efficiency
As part of the AEVA's national conference, Energy, Efficiency Electric Expo and 51st annual general meeting, EV drivers from around the country lined up to test their hypermiling mettle against the impressive 1271 m kunanyi / Mt Wellington. The inaugural kunanyi Challenge tested the driving efficiency of available EVs, and benchmarks their performance against the manufacturer's claimed worldwide harmonized light vehicle test procedure (WLTP) range.
Participants left Princess Wharf with a full charge, driving to the top of the mountain before returning, engaging as much regenerative braking as they dare. Energy to fully recharge is recorded and the drier who records the least amount of energy is the outright winner!
The four category winners were:
Overall winner: Peter Dawborn (2018 Hyundai Ioniq) – net 4.33 kilowatt hours consumed.
Handicap winner: Jorgen Jorgensen (2016 Nissan eNV200 commercial van)
Real-world winner: Rowan Hunt (2023 Tesla Model Y)
Exhibitor’s prize: Tesla Australia (2024 Tesla Model 3)
