AEVA has described the Federal Opposition's promise to remove penalties for exceeding emission targets as "misguided".

"Claims that the New Vehicle Emission Standard (NVES) will unfairly impact low-income families are spurious, because these families do not generally buy new cars" said the AEVA President, Dr Chris Jones.  "Households are already realising that an affordable used EV will save over $3000 per year in fuel and maintenance", he added.

The AEVA maintains that the scheme must not only have teeth, but that vehicle importers have a range of options to achieve the targets without needing to pass costs on to consumers.

AEVA has reiterated calls to extend the NVES through to 2035, when all new vehicles should be zero emission in operation.
