The ACT's EV incentive of two years of free registration closed on 30 June 2024. Two years free registration is being replaced with an emissions-based registration system where zero emissions (and low emissions) vehicles will be charged less registration than high emissions vehicles. Weight will no longer be factored into the registration fee. There is also a calculator to estimate your post-1 July registration fees. If you enter your plate number, you can save a lot of input.

Below is a simple reckoner to explain how the transition from the current incentive scheme to the new emissions-based registation arrangement will work. More details can be found at Access Canberra.

I bought (or plan to buy) my EV:
Before 24 May 2021 You were not eligible for two years free registration. Your first renewal after 1 July 2024 will be under the new emissions-based arrangement.
Between 24 May 2021 and 30 June 2022 Your two years of free registration comes to an end on or before 30 June 2024. Any registration renewals that occur between then and 1 July 2024 will use the lowest available weight-based registration fee.
1 July 2022 and 30 June 2024 Your two years of free registration will come to an end between 1 July 2024 and 30 June 2026. Your first renewal thereafter will be under the new emissions-based registration scheme.
After 30 June 2024 You will not be eligible for two years free registration and your registration will be based on the new emissions-based registration scheme.
