ACT Free Rego Incentive Closing
The ACT's EV incentive of two years of free registration closed on 30 June 2024. Two years free registration is being replaced with an emissions-based registration system where zero emissions (and low emissions) vehicles will be charged less registration than high emissions vehicles. There is also a calculator to estimate your post-1 July registration fees. If you enter your plate number, you can save a lot of input.
Below is a simple reckoner to explain how the transition from the current incentive scheme to the new emissions-based registation arrangement will work. More details can be found at Access Canberra.

Before 24 May 2021 | You were not eligible for two years free registration. Your first renewal after 1 July 2024 will be under the new emissions-based arrangement. |
Between 24 May 2021 and 30 June 2022 | Your two years of free registration comes to an end on or before 30 June 2024. Any registration renewals that occur between then and 1 July 2024 will use the lowest available weight-based registration fee. |
1 July 2022 and 30 June 2024 | Your two years of free registration will come to an end between 1 July 2024 and 30 June 2026. Your first renewal thereafter will be under the new emissions-based registration scheme. |
After 30 June 2024 | You will not be eligible for two years free registration and your registration will be based on the new emissions-based registration scheme. |
